A series of exclusive upgrades that were only available to the more expensive ‘Pro’ iPhones would be making their way to Apple’s entire iPhone 17 lineup. With even the base model and the ultra-thin flagship flaunting the ‘Air’ moniker said to receive these hardware changes. Previously, we reported that all four models would be treated to LTPO OLED technology that would bring ProMotion support, and this time, a new report states that these devices will also feature the newer M14 displays, with Samsung being the exclusive supplier. What is surprising is that the Korean manufacturer has yet to employ this technology as its top-tier Galaxy S25 Ultra ships with the previous-generation M13 variant.
Samsung is said to provide the largest order of OLED panels to Apple’s iPhone 17 family, with an estimate said to reach up to 90 million units for the year
The M14 OLED upgrade is currently present on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, and according to ETNews, with details spotted by the tipster Jukanlosreve, Samsung will provide this panel with the intention to apply it to all the iPhone 17 models. The report does not mention why Apple is reducing the number of exclusive upgrades for the ‘Pro’ versions. However, it could be related to the shipments witnessing a slump despite giving customers more incentive to spend the extra premium to make the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max their daily driver.
With the M14 OLED arriving to even the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air, buyers who lack the budget to purchase the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will not be disappointed when they spend less money to experience the same technology. The existence of M14 has been mentioned by Jukanlosreve previously, with the most obvious benefit being that this technology improves the efficiency of the blue-emitting layer. This advantage helps to increase brightness levels by 30 percent compared to the older M13 displays while also upping the lifespan.
Samsung is expected to benefit immensely by holding the title of exclusive supplier for these M14 OLED panels because the report estimates that the Korean behemoth will provide up to a whopping 90 million units to Apple this year. The only drawback to using more advanced displays is that these are made at a higher cost per unit, so it remains to be seen whether Apple will absorb the manufacturing overhead and pass the savings to the customer or end up charging a premium for this upgrade.
