AMD seems to be working hard to bring forward its next-gen Zen 5 and Zen 6 CPUs that have appeared within an engineer's profile.
AMD's Next-Gen Zen 5 "Nirvana" & Zen 6 "Morpheus" Codenames Leak Out - Based on 3nm and 2nm Process Nodes
Although AMD's Zen 5 CPUs have been confirmed by the chipmaker itself, the leak points out to the future Zen 6 CPUs too along with the codenames for the core architecture that is used internally by AMD. According to the leaked description, the specific task that the engineer was responsible for is the power management project for at least three core IPs starting with the Zen 4 core which began in Q1 2020 followed by Zen 5 in Q1 2021, and then Zen 6 in Q1 2023.
The Zen 4 core architecture which currently powers the AMD Ryzen 7000 and EPYC Genoa lineup had work on power management beginning in Q1 2020 so a launch in Q3 2022 means that it took around 2.5 years for the final chips to come to fruition. In a similar fashion, the first Zen 5 CPUs are most likely to appear in the second half of 2024 while the Zen 6 CPUs will come around 2H 2025 or later.

As for the codenames, we also get to know what Zen 5 and Zen 6 are internally referred to as. The AMD Zen 4 cores based on the 5nm process node are codenamed Persephone. The Zen 5 core that utilizes a 3nm process node will use the Nirvana codename though the Zen 5C cores may utilize a totally different name. Also, Zen 5 comes in both 4nm and 3nm flavors bu the server chips here are tagged as a 3nm part.
Finally, we have the Zen 6 CPUs which are said to utilize a 2nm process node for servers and have been codenamed Morpheus. Those are interesting choices of codenames but do remember that we are still years away from the launch of Zen 5 and Zen 6 core architectures as AMD isn't quite yet done with its Zen 4 architecture.
- AMD Zen 4 (5nm) - Persephone
- AMD Zen 5 (3nm) - Nirvana
- AMD Zen 6 (2nm) Morpehus
Rumored performance estimates show that Zen 5 will bring a big improvement over Zen 4 on servers in the form of EPYC Turin which we mentioned a few hours ago here. Meanwhile, the successor to the EPYC Turin family (Zen 5) is expected to be codenamed EPYC Venice and most likely going to use the Zen 6 (2nm) core architecture.
AMD Zen 5 in 2024, Featuring V-Cache & Compute Variants With Brand New Microarchitecture
AMD has so far confirmed that the new Zen 5 architecture will launch in 2024. The Zen 5 CPUs will come in three flavors (Zen 5 / Zen 5 V-Cache / Zen 5C) and the chip itself is designed from the ground up with a completely brand new microarchitecture that focuses on delivering enhanced performance and efficiency, a re-pipelined front-end, and wide issue along with Integrated AI and machine learning optimization. Some of the key features of Zen 5 CPUs include:
- Enhanced performance and efficiency
- Re-pipelined front end and wide issue
- Integrated AI and Machine Learning optimizations
