Medieval strategy role-playing game Crusader Kings III has surpassed 4 million copies sold across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, developer and publisher Paradox has announced.
The milestone comes days ahead of the game's next major expansion launch, Khans of the Steppe, which is due to arrive on all platforms at the top of next week on Monday, April 28, 2025.
In a press release, game director Alexander Oltner commented on the milestone, saying, "Seeing Crusader Kings III succeed in both the computer and console spaces is such a treat for us! Millions of people are engaging with history and writing their own dramatic tales of success and failure, which is a major goal of ours. CK3 turns five this year, and we're happy to know that there are millions more stories waiting to be told."
PC players who have already purchased the Chapter IV expansion can jump into Khans of the Steppe. Console players will, however, have to wait, as there's a delay between what's available on the PC version of the game and what's on the console version of the game.
Console players, for example, can only purchase up to Chapter II, regarding Crusader Kings III's expansions. The delay isn't a surprise, though, as Paradox has always been clear that these console versions are "adaptations," rather than a direct port. The shape of the Crusader Kings series has always been made to fit a PC mold, so bringing it to consoles in the first place has been a new challenge for the studio, especially as it is working with another team to do the actual adapting, in Lab24.
Even though it is at a slower pace, at least strategy fans on console are finally getting to share in the fun PC players have enjoyed for years, especially with this release, which is easily one of the stronger titles in the series.
In our review of Crusader Kings III when it first launched five years ago, we said:
"Crusader Kings III pulls off a difficult dual victory, bringing a new level of depth, charm, and polish to the franchise, while also making it far more approachable than before. Some aspects of Crusader Kings III still aren’t as user-friendly as they could be, but overall, this is a worthy heir to the throne."
