Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

Back in 2024 Microsoft and Bethesda announced a new Indiana Jones game was coming our way courtesy of producer Todd Howard and Wolfenstein developer MachineGames, but since then, very little else has been revealed.  Rumors that the game may be launching this year have been making the rounds, but it’s been radio silence from Microsoft and Bethesda themselves.

Well, today during the latest Xbox Developer Direct the curtain was finally pulled back on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (yes that is the official name). We got our first peek at gameplay, and yes, it’s also been confirmed the game is coming out in 2024.

The first trailer and gameplay footage of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle confirms the game will be primarily played via a first-person perspective, although MachineGames says they'll pull the camera back for cutscenes and environmental traversal and platforming. The level of detail in the visuals looks next-level impressive, with ray tracing and plenty of other techniques seemingly in use. It also looks like MachineGames is taking somewhat of an "immersive sim" approach with the gameplay, promising you'll be able to tackle challenges your own way, opting for stealth, melee combat, or gunplay. Oh, and, of course, you'll have access to Indy's iconic whip, which you can use as a weapon or climbing tool. You can check the first trailer for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, below.

In terms of storyline, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will take place somewhere between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, depicting perhaps a slightly-more-mature, but still "in his prime" Indy. This will be a global story, with Indy traveling to far-flung locations like New York, the Vatican, Thailand, the Himilayas, and Egypt as he unravels a sprawling mystery. Along the way he'll team up with an investigative reporter named Gina and, of course, will take out a few Nazis. Here's what director Jens Andersson had to say about the game and its first-person perspective...

"Our game is about putting you in the shoes of an iconic hero. Since we are doing this mostly in first-person, you have the chance to truly become Indy. First-person makes you part of this world – allowing you to explore and experience things more intimately. What will you do when you’re dropped into this adventure with your wits and your whip? The world of Indiana Jones is a world with mysteries around every corner, where you’re racing against the clock and outsmarting your enemies as you hunt down artifacts.”
