Apple announced the first beta of iOS 18 to developers, and there are many reasons why you should not install it on your iPhone right now, at least on your daily driver. We do know that users would not spare a moment to jump to the latest update when it is released for the public, considering the scale of features it brings to the iPhone, with various models working together to make iOS 18 an AI-first platform. Apple has now shared insights on the iOS 17 adoption rate right after the iOS 18 beta was released to developers.
77 percent of all iPhone models in the world are running iOS 17 at this point
Unlike iOS 18, iOS 17 was an incremental update, only bringing a slew of changes to the table, including some customization options for the Home Screen. The latest update jumped a few steps ahead with the customization, making the iPhone a very close contender to Android. The company has now released adoption rate numbers for the iPhone and iPad models, which are currently running iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, respectively.
The iOS 17 adoption rate is derived from the App Store, showing iPhone and iPad models that have been transacted on the the platform, and the stats were revealed a day before WWDC began. The company states that 77 percent of all iPhone models have updated to iOS 17 alongside 68 percent of all iPad users updated to iPadOS 17.
If we go a bit deeper, almost 86 percent of all iPhone models launched in the past four years have updated to iOS 17, and in the same time period, 77 percent of iPad users have updated to iPadOS 17. In comparison, Apple announced last year during the same time period that 81 percent of all iPhones had updated to iOS 16 before iOS 17 was announced.
The company has released the first beta of iOS 18 to developers, which you can download on compatible devices for free right now through the Settings app. iOS 18 has been making headlines with its new AI models and Apple Intelligence, featuring advanced generative technology and collaborations with OpenAI. The platform will be released to the general public later this year, possibly in September, alongside the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models.
