Apple announced the new 13-inch and 15-inch M4 MacBook Air family earlier this month, and the company is not taking a breather when it comes to proceeding with the successor’s launch because a new report states that the M5 lineup is already under development. It appears that the company wants to maintain the momentum of its increased Mac sales by introducing refreshed models as quickly as possible, and just like the upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch M5 MacBook Pro family, we doubt there will be anything noteworthy to look forward to other than the chipset upgrade.
Early development of the M5 MacBook Air suggests that the 13-inch and 15-inch models should arrive around March of next year
As reported by iClarified, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has provided some information on the M5 MacBook Air, stating that the upcoming lineup is already being developed, which could be surprising to hear because the latest models just recently went on sale. If the California-based giant is moving with lightning pace to ensure that the M5 MacBook Air family arrives earlier, it likely means that there will be no design change.
We should continue to expect the same chassis, coupled with the ‘fanless’ cooling solution which helps to reduce the weight of the M4 MacBook Air range and the previous-generation models, but Apple has been reported to introduce a design makeover in 2026, at least for the pricier MacBook Pro models. Assuming this is the company’s plan, then it is entirely possible that a revamped MacBook Air will arrive in early 2027, but that is a long wait.
For the M5 MacBook Air series, we expect Apple to showcase an announcement in the first quarter of 2026, with the chipset said to be mass produced on TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process. If you exercise some patience, you can experience the M5’s capabilities in the updated MacBook Air next year, but if you want to get an upgrade right now, the portable Mac powered by the M4 is a solid option as you pretty much have a desktop-class SoC running inside a thin and portable machine.
What is even better is that Apple’s latest lineup is already discounted on Amazon, starting from $949 instead of $999, with the possibility that you get some price cuts on the higher-tier storage and memory variants too.
