Today, Meta has introduced a subscription that will allow Facebook and Instagram users to enjoy an ad-free experience. You can pay for this shared subscription and enjoy the experience, but there is a catch, and it is that the subscription is currently only available in Europe.
Instagram and Facebook go ad-free in Europe, EEA, and Switzerland
Starting next month, Facebook and Instagram users in the EU, EEA, and Switzerland will be able to pay a flat monthly fee. Paying this fee will remove all ads from the Meta-owned platform. Meta has clarified that this subscription is being launched to “comply with evolving European regulations.” This means that we might not see something like that coming out in other regions.
To comply with evolving European regulations, we are introducing a new subscription option in the EU, EEA and Switzerland. In November, we will be offering people who use Facebook or Instagram and reside in these regions the choice to continue using these personalised services for free with ads, or subscribe to stop seeing ads. While people are subscribed, their information will not be used for ads.
Meta also talks about how it believes in an ad-supported internet,” and then talks about how the “option for people to purchase a subscription for no ads balances the requirements of European regulators while giving users choice.” So, if you are looking for an ad-free Facebook and Instagram experience, this is something that you should be looking at.
If you are interested in an ad-free Facebook and Instagram experience, then you are going to have to pay €9.99/month via the web. If you are looking to get the same subscription on Android or iOS, then you can pay €12.99/month. Starting in March next year, additional accounts linked in the Account Center will be required to pay €6.00/month to go ad-free. At the moment, we don't know if Meta will be introducing the same tier outside the EU, but we will keep you posted if that happens.
