Apple is wasting no time in updating its 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, with a new report stating that the M5 will be part of the specifications. As you would expect, the more powerful chipset versions like the M5 Pro and M5 Max will likely be announced alongside the new portable Macs, but the latest update is that apart from an Apple Silicon upgrade, nothing else will be changed from the upcoming launch.
A major redesign of the MacBook Pro is only expected in 2026 when the newer models are expected to be thinner as a result of transitioning to OLED technology
In addition to preparing the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro refreshes, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman writes in his latest ‘Power On’ newsletter that we should see the M5 MacBook Pro family arrive later this year. While no specification details have been mentioned in the latest report, MacRumors mentions that these portable Macs will not ship with a design change, and those who have grown tired of the current-generation aesthetics will have to wait until 2026 to witness a new chassis, which is said to be thinner because the newer models will reportedly sport OLED instead of mini-LED.
As for the M5, there have been conflicting reports about the chipset. On one hand, we have reported that the Apple Silicon entered mass production in February this year, while another claims that the SoC could enter full-scale production in the second half of 2025. There is also the possibility that the M5 series will adopt TSMC’s advanced ‘SoIC-MH’ packaging, but it is mentioned that the technology will be applied to the M5 Pro and M5 Max and not the base version.
This packaging is said to employ vertically stacked chips, resulting in additional circuit layers, leading to better performance. Another edge that the M5 will probably have over the M4 is that it will utilize TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process, resulting in better performance and efficiency. However, given how powerful the latest MacBook Pro family already is, the upgrade is likely targeted at those who skipped out on purchasing any M4-powered machine.
If you prefer not to wait for the M5 MacBook Pro series, you can check out the various discounts that have been applied to the M4 MacBook Pro lineup, with multiple configurations on Amazon starting from just $1,399. Best of all, the company is not skimping out on the base unified RAM and storage because you are getting 16GB of memory paired with a 512GB SSD.
