Foldable iPhone prototype to share similar design with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 6

Apple likely has multiple foldable iPhone prototypes that it has been testing behind closed doors, but there is a bevy of reasons why they have yet to reach the production line. One of those prototypes offers more utility, with a tipster implying that the design is similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6, as it sports both an inner and outer display. One tipster has now shared the specifications of the ‘book style’ prototype, but no word on when we can expect an official launch.

A foldable device was previously said to launch sometime in 2026, but no confirmation on which product class Apple will release

A major update was provided by tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, stating that one foldable iPhone prototype with two displays is being tested. The outer display is said to measure 5.49 inches, and when the device is completely unfolded, the inner display will be revealed, sporting a 7.74-inch panel. No more specifications have been mentioned, suggesting that the prototype is in its early testing phase. However, we have reported that Apple plans to launch a foldable device sometime in 2026.

Unfortunately, the exact nature of the product was not revealed at the time. To remind you, Apple has been working to launch an entire portfolio of foldable devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. One of the biggest reasons why the technology giant has yet to unveil any of these products, particularly foldable technology on an iPhone, is because all of its prototypes display visible creases. For Apple, the presence of a crease disrupts the flawless design perspective that the Cupertino firm has a staunch belief in, so assuming this crease is not eliminated, we doubt a launch will transpire.

Another variant of the foldable iPhone is reported to feature a 12-inch screen with a dual-lens camera, but it is far too large to be categorized as a smartphone. The ‘book style’ design appears to be the more practical approach because it delivers more utility compared to the clamshell version. Also, given Apple’s forte with software, apps can effortlessly play well with iOS in varying display sizes, giving the company a distinct advantage over a company like Samsung that relies on its partner’s operating system.
