Qualcomm To Announce New Chipset On April 2, But Teaser Poster Does Not Reveal The Official Name; Will Likely Be The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4

Qualcomm to announce new chipset on April 2, could be the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 launch last year gave the signal that Qualcomm was willing to provide a non-flagship chipset to its smartphone partners to allow them to outfit their devices with flagship features without having to bear the premium cost. The company likely aims to keep this lineup going with the arrival of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, which could be announced a couple of days from now, as a teaser poster hints at a future launch, though the chipset’s exact model name has not been mentioned.

Unlike the Snapdragon 8 Elite, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 will lack in-house Oryon cores and will rely on older ARM CPU designs

Using Google Lens, the teaser’s machine translation to English reveals the terms ‘New generation, powerful group,’ and below, it is mentioned ‘Snapdragon Flagship New Product Media.’ While we cannot expect the app to deliver an accurate ‘word to word’ translation, we have learned that what Qualcomm intends to announce will occupy a premium space in the company’s family of chipsets. Various accounts on X believe that the release will be the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, with some of them also referring to the silicon as the Snapdragon 8s Elite.

However, we will prefer to call the upcoming SoC the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 because there are a ton of differences separating this chipset from the Snapdragon 8 Elite, with the most obvious one being the absence of in-house Oryon cores. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 will instead rely on older ARM designs, with the configuration being ‘1 + 3 + 2 + 2.’ The fastest core is expected to be the Cortex-X4, operating at 3.21GHz, followed by three Cortex-A720 cores running at 3.01GHz, two Cortex-A720 cores functioning at 2.80GHz, and lastly, two Cortex-A720 sporting a 2.02GHz frequency.

Aside from this configuration, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is also said to feature an Adreno 825 GPU, with Anvin commenting on X that the AnTuTu score obtained by this SoC has exceeded 2 million. These specifications reveal that Qualcomm’s upcoming release will not rely on any low-power cores, which will help to maintain incredible multi-core performance, but at the cost of power draw. We assume that the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 will leverage TSMC’s 4nm N4P node to maintain optimum efficiency, meaning the chipset may perform equivalent to the previous-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. As for the other details, those will be revealed during the official announcement, so stay tuned.
