The mobile division of Samsung is currently spearheaded by TM Roh, but the Korean giant has put out an official announcement stating that the executive will now take up more roles in various sectors in an interim capacity until a suitable replacement is assigned. The TV and smartphone businesses, which were under the supervision of former Vice Chairman and co-CEO Han Jong-hee, will now be under TM Roh after the untimely passing of his predecessor.
A new Chief Operating Officer, Won-joon Choi, is assigned to overlook the Mobile eXperience Business, in addition to his other roles
Jun Young-hyun, the current CEO, was solely in charge of Samsung after Han Jong-hee’s demise, leaving him to navigate the company out of rough waters where it faces stiff competition from multiple businesses, including the chip division, where the company has been reported on multiple occasions to be severely underperforming. As reported by Reuters, a Samsung spokesperson has stated that nothing has been decided if the co-CEO structure will remain, as the board’s final decision will take place later.
As for Roh, he has been in charge of Samsung’s mobile business since 2020, with this role said to be pivotal in boosting shipments of newer devices. Amid increasing competition in this space, the 56-year-old mentioned that the arrival of AI-powered smartphones and future foldable launches will help to penetrate new markets. However, with this new position, Roh has to divide equal focus on the DX Division, which includes TVs, home appliances and smartphones, with the company stating that this reshuffle has taken place to minimize the leadership vacuum in the DX Division.
A new COO, Won-joon Choi, has been appointed for the Mobile eXperience Business, and in addition to undertaking this new responsibility, he will maintain his position as Head of R&D Office and Head of Global Operation Team of Mobile eXperience Business. Samsung has also named Cheolgi Kim the Head of Digital Appliances Business.
