Samsung's Project Moohan teased

The Apple Vision Pro might not have been a ‘home run’ hit in terms of sales, but no one can deny the technological marvel that is the premium headset, and it comes as no surprise that Samsung has shifted to the fifth gear when playing catch-up against its biggest rival in the smartphone space. Project Moohan is proof of the Korean giant’s efforts to tap into the XR headset category, with the company providing a teaser of what to expect down the road.

No specifics have been provided about Project Moohan, but Samsung’s XR headset will rely on the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 to drive all of the device’s performance

It was previously learned that Samsung’s team returned to the drawing board after learning about the Apple Vision Pro. During the prototyping phase, the XR headset featured a ‘less than premium’ design and was being tested with the older and power-hungry Exynos 2200. Naturally, these are not the ideal traits for an XR headset that would be categorized for the premium segment, but Samsung has turned things around with Project Moohan. Looking at the slew of images, the device looks more premium, and some might claim that it bears a resemblance to the Apple Vision Pro.

Even though the company was showcasing Project Moohan during its Galaxy Unpacked event, no one was allowed to touch the XR headset, but the snapped images reveal that the head-mounted wearable features a decent amount of cushion to ensure a comfortable fit. Several cameras are also present behind the glass cover, with the sensors likely designed for both mixed and augmented reality experiences. While no label mentioned the specifications of Project Moohan, we have reported that Samsung’s first XR headset will feature the 6-core Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2.

This SoC was designed in collaboration with Google and Samsung and can drive a 4.3K resolution per display at 90FPS. The Adreno 740 GPU paired with the chipset can decode 8K 60FPS videos and encode 8K 30FPS or 4K 60FPS content. Additionally, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 can drive 12 live camera feeds simultaneously, with just a 12ms delay. The silicon also supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 standards, which should help to reduce latency considerably.

The chipset upgrade hints that Project Moohan will be a capable XR headset, but Samsung has not provided any launch timeline. Instead, the device will be provided to developers first, and after that, we pray that Samsung gives an update concerning its release.
