The future where you will be able to wear your phone on your wrists does not look like it is that far away, as Samsung has decided to showcase a phone that actually bends and wraps around your wrist. Do note that it is still a work in progress, but it is slowly turning into something that can actually be possible in the near future.
Samsung's bendy Cling Band looks really incredible no matter how impractical it is
Samsung is calling this bending phone the Cling Band, and at the heart of it all is a flexible OLED screen. You can use this band as a smartphone or a smartwatch, depending on your usage. Once the device is completely straight in the traditional shape of the phone, it looks like any other smartphone - it offers a thin form factor and has a bezel-less display, too. The South Korean tech giant has even put a camera on the rear, a USB Type-C for charging, and a loudspeaker. The bending action is supported by a groove-like structure that allows the device to easily bend.
When you bend the phone, you can see that it forms an arc shape. The rear also has a heart rate monitor, which means that wearing it on your wrist can make the Cling Band into a fitness tracker that will offer full tracking that Samsung Health supports.
This is one of the coolest concepts I have seen from Samsung, and I have a feeling that something like that could become a mainstream product in a couple of years, but not just right now. There are a lot of things with the Cling Band that are not ideal for a standard smartphone. For starters, durability is one thing that comes to mind. Another thing is how uncomfortable it would be to wear it on your wrists at all times. Plus, I don't understand why the device would have health-tracking sensors on the back when the company is trying to make health-tracking available on much smaller devices, like the Galaxy Ring.
I believe it is nothing more than a really cool concept from Samsung Display, and there could be several applications for it. We might even see it hitting the market at some point. Whenever that happens, we will keep you posted.
