A prototype of Samsung’s rumored AR headset was tested with an Exynos 2200, but that does not mean the company will launch the device with its own chipset. According to the latest benchmark leak, the Korean giant will incorporate Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, among other details, which we will get into immediately.
Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 features a 6-core CPU cluster but is slower than Apple’s M2, meaning Samsung’s AR headset is already less powerful than its closest competitor
The use of Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 in the upcoming mixed-reality headset is justified because Samsung has not mass produced any chipset that is tailor-made for this product category. Additionally, Qualcomm’s new SoC may disappoint in Geekbench 6’s single-core and multi-core scores that were spotted by 91mobiles, but it grants support for various other technologies that amplify the mixed-reality experience. The image below shows that Samsung’s AR headset with the model number SM-I130 obtained a score of 1,076 and 2,078, but here is the interesting bit.
The benchmark reveals that the device was tested with 16GB RAM. A combination of virtual and augmented reality content is highly memory intensive, so it is necessary to equip such head-mounted wearables with a sufficient amount of RAM so the experience does not get crippled. The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 was designed in collaboration with Google and Samsung and can drive a 4.3K resolution per display at 90FPS. The Adreno 740, paired with the chipset, can decode 8K 60FPS videos and encode 8K 30FPS or 4K 60FPS content.

The SoC is also designed to handle more than 12 cameras for live camera feeds, with Qualcomm claiming that there is just a 12ms delay for live camera feeds. The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 is integrated with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 adapters, which should reduce the latency even further. So far, Samsung has yet to introduce an equivalent of the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 to use it in its first AR headset iteration, but given that the market is nascent, it will take a few years before the Korean giant becomes serious about firing off development of its custom solution.
