Apple’s Mac mini, iMac And MacBook Pro Were Used To Edit The Insanely Popular Thriller Severance, Hinting That The Use Of Ludicrously Expensive Hardware Is Unnecessary

Severance goes behind the scenes, with Apple showing that the TV series was edited on a Mac mini, iMac and MacBook Pro

It is the magic of editing that elevates the quality of a TV series, and one can imagine that if Severance required an estimated $20 million per episode to make, it would also necessitate the use of expensive hardware worth tens of thousands of dollars to carry out the post-production work. As it turns out, the exact opposite was happening, thanks to a series of revelations showcased in the latest article and video providing evidence that various Apple Silicon machines like the Mac mini, iMac, and MacBook Pro were employed to edit the show, negating the need to purchase overly expensive equipment.

One of Severance’s editors highlights how easy it was to share data and collaborate for any corrections while also mentioning that the ecosystem of Apple’s Mac mini, iMac, and MacBook Pro became essential for editing purposes

The latest M4M4 Pro, and M4 Max deliver sufficient firepower to not just bulldoze through intensive tasks such as editing top-tier shows like Severance, but are also highly efficient to the point where Apple can cram them into products with thinner form factors and reduced footprint. In addition to the advantages these SoCs bring to the table, Apple’s software ecosystem also encourages a seamless workflow, which is why Geoffrey Richman, one of the editors of Severance, describes the benefits of using Apple Silicon Macs to facilitate his daily operations.

“I can work on my laptop and I can work on my iMac, and I can work at the post facility or I can work at Ben’s office, and as long as I’m logged into my account, everything I do shows up everywhere. I could be lying in bed and I have a thought, and I’ll type it into my iPhone, and then the next day, it just shows up in the Notes app on my desktop. That aspect of Mac I find very handy — to not think about which system I’m physically at.”

Richman also took time to compare the Mac to the PC. Judging by his preference, he obviously has an affinity towards Apple products, but he does mention that he likes the Mac’s interface, as the ‘operating system is laid out to be much more comfortable. I’m able to move between different applications very quickly on Mac.’ While working on a Severance episode titled ‘Woe’s Holloway,’ Richman mentions that he depended on the performance, portability, and battery life of a MacBook Pro for when he visited Ben Stiller near the snow-covered Minnewaska State Park Preserve in upstate New York.

Stiller is one of the Executive Producers of Severance, and Richman relied on multiple ports, including the HDMI port on the MacBook Pro, to deliver a ton of convenience, as he was able to plug it to the TV and start editing right away.
