Spider-Man to Bloodborne, PS4/PS5 Sales Until End of 2021 Leak; PC Ports on Downward Slope

While the big three console makers will sometimes crow about sales when it suits them, getting exact sales numbers out of Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo is difficult. That said, thanks to the huge Insomniac Games ransomware leak, which has revealed the studio’s lineup for the next decade and much more, we now have solid sales figures for PlayStation up until approximately a couple of years ago.

The document, which was uncovered and shared on the ResetEra forums, offers very in-depth figures for Sony’s entire PS4 catalog, as well as PS5 games up until around the end of 2021 or very early 2022 (Horizon Forbidden West, which came out in February 2022, is not included, so you can consider the cutoff somewhere around there).

On PS4, unsurprisingly, the big winner was Marvel's Spider-Man, which sold 22.69 million copies as of early 2022. After that are God of War at 21 million, Horizon Zero Dawn at 19.3 million, Uncharted 4 at 18.65 million, and The Last of Us Remastered (PS4 version) at 18.63 million. As for surprises, Bloodborne sold a very solid 7.65 million copies and Days Gone, famously deemed a disappointment by Sony, sold 7.24 million. Meanwhile, the much-hyped Death Stranding moved 4.39 million.

As for the PS5 (remember, these are early numbers from when the PS5 userbase was smaller), Spider-Man: Miles Morales was on top with 11.13 million copies sold, followed by Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart at 2.73 million, Demon's Soul remake at 2.08 million, and the Ghost of Tsushima remaster at 1.86 million (the original PS4 version sold 7.6 million).

One thing not fully shown by the sales chart discussed above are results for PlayStation’s PC ports. Thankfully, another chart shows Sony’s PC sales until roughly sometime in early 2023. While not a straight line, the chart does broadly show declining results for the ports – things got off to a hot start with Horizon Zero Dawn selling 3.3 million on PC, Days Gone selling 1.7 million, and God of War 2.5 million. More recently, Spider-Man Remastered sold 1.3 million, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection sold 483,000, Spider-Man: Miles Morales sold 450,000, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure only sold 62,000. Of course, the latter titles had less time on the market as of the date Sony shared the figures internally, but like most games, PC ports sell the majority of their copies at or near launch.

What are your thoughts on these leaked figures? Anything surprising? Is it about darn time Sony did something with Bloodborne considering how well it sold?
