Threads Is Heading To Its Inevitable Death As Twitter Stands Strong Amidst The Competition

It has been 11 days since Meta's Twitter clone Threads launched. While the app went on to become a monumental success, crossing 100 million users in just 5 days, it turns out that the honeymoon period is finally over as the platform is headed towards a sharp decline with no apparent fix on the side. What became of Twitter? Absolutely nothing, as the website is still standing strong.

Threads is seeing a sharp decline in the user base, while Twitter remains unfazed. Possibly heading toward an early grave

So what went wrong with Threads Well, a lot of things did, and some of us were very apparent. But let's talk numbers first. Meta saw daily active users of 45 million on July 6th earlier this month, which dropped to 28 million on July 13 earlier this month. This is a massive 38% drop in the user base. Not just that, people are not spending a lot of time on the app either. Where people would spend 20 minutes on the app when it launched, they have only been spending 7 minutes on it, based on information from 11th July. This drop is 75%, and it took just 4 days to drop this low.

At the same time, Twitter, the platform that everyone thought Threads would end up killing, has not seen any drop in its number. Even if people did leave Twitter for the latter, they ended up coming back to the platform because, let's be honest, Twitter, in its current stage, is very powerful. This renders Threads an app that no one really wants, and many have probably forgotten that they even have it installed on their phone.

Data by Sensor Tower

This is certainly a worrying statistic for Meta's latest venture because this decline is sharp, and if this trend goes, in a couple of days, no one will be using the app that would have killed Twitter. You can see in the chart provided above by Sensor Tower how Instagram and Twitter are basically unfazed and will continue to be on the same trajectory.

There are several things that contribute to Threads' unsurprising demise. For starters, the app seems like an extension of Instagram rather than something standalone. For starters, you are going to need an Instagram account to sign up. Additionally, you cannot delete your account without deleting the Instagram account. Last but not least, it is also a barebones version of what Twitter presents, and there are nearly not enough features. Sure, this would be expected from an app that has just launched, but if Meta really wanted to do more than capitalize on Twitter's problems, it should have made an app that has all the features that Twitter doesn't or is still working on.

Of course, we all know that Threads is set to get a host of new features post-launch, but are they really enough to save the app from ultimately sinking because judging by the data alone, the platform is headed towards a disaster and it would take a miracle to prevent that from happening.
